Collectif CARE Salmon

The CARE Salmon collective aims to bring together major players in the supply chain in order to move salmon farming practices, particularly in Norway and Scotland, towards higher animal welfare standards. The collective's aim is to draft an open letter setting out common demands for improving salmon farming conditions.

CARE Salmon already brings together key companies from different sectors: Labeyrie Fine Foods, Les Mousquetaires, Auchan Retail International and API Restauration, supported by the expertise of the Bankiva office and CIWF (Compassion in Wolrd Farming). The collective is open to all French salmon suppliers: join us!

The collective is based on the values of sharing and co-construction, to positively influence salmon farming conditions and meet growing consumer expectations in terms of animal welfare.

Starting in June 2024, a series of 7 meetings is planned, each focusing on a major salmon welfare issue: from monitoring methods during the grow-out phase to slaughtering practices, density control, sea lice management and staff training. Combining the most recent scientific knowledge, alternative techniques developed, societal expectations and, above all, the reality of practices in production basins, the collective draws on all the expertise available to carry out its mission.

The collective has set itself a short deadline, the summer of 2025, to finalize the co-construction of demands that will be included in the open letter, and will cover the main animal welfare issues in salmon farming: slaughter, animal handling, monitoring of indicators, innovations... The collective is open to any French player in salmon supply:

Lucille Bellegarde, Head of Agri-Food Affairs at CIWF: "The launch of this collective represents a major first step towards improving salmon welfare. This project embodies a proactive and collaborative approach, aligned with CIWF's values, to meet consumer expectations and the ethical demands of our time. We invite all interested companies to join this initiative and contribute to positive change in the salmon farming industry.

Gaëlle Ouari-Bourdon, CSR, Communications and Brand Strategy Director at Labeyrie Fine Foods, comments:"The strength of this collective is that it brings together several committed downstream players (processors, distributors), accompanied by leading experts on the subject, the NGO CIWF and the ethologist firm Bankiva, who share the same general interest objectives, namely to improve salmon farming and slaughtering conditions."
